Fleeing motorcyclist dead after crash

By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News Police say a ma n died after crashing his motorcycle into an SUV a s he fled from officers during an attempted traffic stop on Terre Haute’s north side Friday night. Kaleb Long, 24, of Terre Haute, died shortly after being transported to a local hospital, just after 7 p.m.  Sgt. Matt Ames,  of the Indiana State Police, explained that Trooper Daniel Organ  tried to stop the 2012 Suzuki for a registration violation at the intersection of N. Third Street and Eighth Avenue. However, Long disregarded police and fled southbound at a high rate of speed. A pursuit ensued. Ultimately, the pursuit ended when the motorcycle struck a 2002 Jeep Liberty at N. Third and Cherry Streets. The other driver, Brian Scott, 53, also of Terre Haute, was not injured in the accident. Well-being check ends deadly in Vigo County after officer fires once at resident allegedly pointing rifle

Lucy Perry photos  By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News A reportedly armed and suicidal man was killed by an officer conducting a well-being check at his southern Vigo County residence late Wednesday afternoon. James Dockery, 45, of Terre Haute, was pronounced dead at the scene. He suffered from a gunshot wound. According to Sgt. Matt Ames, of the Indiana State Police, an off-duty Vigo County Sheriff's Office deputy initially responded to the home at  7479 S. Carlisle St.  just before 5 p.m., where he  found the seemingly distressed individual. Attempts were made to communicate with Dockery at that time.  A short time later, an on-duty deputy arrived to assist at the scene and quickly observed that Dockery had guns in his possession, Ames said. The on-duty deputy,  Sgt. Vigo County Sheriff's Office shooting investigation underway, one dead

By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News Lucy Perry photo A shooting death investigation is underway after a man was found dead at a residence near Terre Haute on Valentine's Day. Emergency crews responded to the home at 3762 East Ashland Drive, just off Riley Road, Tuesday around 8 p.m. No additional information has been released at this time, including the name of the victim. He was dead at the scene, reportedly from the gunshot wound. "This investigation is ongoing pending an autopsy and to accurately determine the events which led to this shooting," Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse said. Vigo County Sheriff’s Deputies, Seelyville Town Marshal, Terre Haute City Police, and the Indiana State Police responded, along with Honey Creek Fire, Riley Fire, and Transcare ambulance. Crash with semi kills 2 in Vigo County

ICN photos By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News Two women are dead after officials say the SUV they were traveling crossed the path of a a semi truck just south of Terre Haute Thursday afternoon. ICN photos Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse explained Friday that the  passenger of that vehicle,  Emma Haddox, 84, of Paris , Ill.,  was dead at the scene.  The driver, not yet identified, was sent via medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital In Indianapolis, where  she died a short time later. Emergency crews responded to the fatal crash around 2;30 p.m., just north of the Springhill Drive intersection. The victims' vehicle was struck and went spinning off the roadway, coming to a rest at the KFC restaurant parking lot. Suspect shot and killed during early morning residential break-in

  ICN file photo An early morning residential break-in left the suspect dead at the scene early Sunday morning in Terre Haute. A Terre Haute Police Department spokesman said Michael Bell, 30, of Clay City, was shot and killed at the residence. Another person reportedly with Bell during the incident, was released Sunday without charges being filed at this time. The investigation is ongoing. A 911 call came in around 5:30 a.m. A homeowner in the 200 block of N. Fruitridge Avenue reportedly shot and killed the suspect during the alleged home invasion. Officers were able to find the second person that had been with the alleged intruder, hiding in a neighboring back yard a short time later.

Traffic stop lands man in jail on drug and gun charges

  St. John/ Sullivan Co. Jail SULLIVAN COUNTY - A Linton man was arrested on drug and gun charges after a traffic stop in Sullivan County Tuesday night.   Barry W. St John, 66, was booked into the Sullivan County Jail and charged with: Possession of methamphetamine, Level 3 felony Possession of Schedule I controlled substance, Level 6 felony (2 counts) Serious violent felon in possession of firearm, Level 4 felony (2 counts) Operating vehicle while intoxicated (refusal), Class A misdemeanor Possession of marijuana, Class B misdemeanor ISP photo According to Sgt. Matt Ames, an Indiana State Police trooper stopped the 2003 Buick for an equipment violation on County Road 890 South near County Road 600 East just after 9:30 p.m. During conversation with St John, criminal indicators were detected, and a search of the vehicle was conducted -- which yielded methamphetamine, marijuana, heroin, LSD, and two handguns. It was also determined that the suspect is convicted felon.

Around 9 a.m., The Terre Haute Police Department and Terre Haute Fire Department were dispatched to the two-vehicle accident at the intersection of S.R. 46 and Bill Farr Drive. A commercial van sustained heavy front-end damage and an SUV sustained driver's side damage in the incident. Airbags deployed.

Indiana State Police investigating officer-involved shooting after THPD responds to stabbing

 By Lucy Perry  Indiana Central News Lucy Perry photos A suspect is dead and a domestic abuse victim hospitalized following a report of a stabbing with an officer-involved shooting late Thursday morning on Terre Haute's north side. James Ready, 42, was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to the hospital. Around 11:30 a.m, the Terre Haute Police Department and Terre Haute Fire Department were dispatched to the 1600 block of First Avenue.  At the scene, a woman was observed to be alert and was assisted onto a stretcher. According to scanner traffic at the time, a male shooting victim was nonresponsive at the residence.  No officers were injured in the incident. Police have confirmed the suspect was armed with a knife and was shot and killed after officers forced entry into the home. Truck driver airlifted to hospital after crashing with another semi in southern Vigo County

 By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News Lucy Perry photo One truck driver was airlifted to a hospital after a crash with another semi in southern Vigo County Wednesday afternoon. Honey Creek Fire Department, Trans-Care Ambulance and the Vigo County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to S. U.S. 41 and Harlan Drive around 4 p.m.   Officials say one of the drivers  suffered serious injuries and was flown by helicopter to the hospital for treatment. The other driver reportedly suffered minor injuries.  The crash involved a tanker truck and an Amazon delivery truck and occurred in the northbound lanes of the highway, at a  railroad crossing.The accident caused the tanker truck to run off the roadway into a field. It sustained rear-end damage. The Amazon truck had extensive front-end damage.

Man sentenced to 15 years in federal prison following Vigo County drug investigation

By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News An Indianapolis man was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to drug trafficking-related charges following a Vigo County investigation. Steven Francis, 56, was sentenced  in federal court  Monday in Terre Haute. He  will serve the time in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, illegal possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon and laundering of monetary instruments. He will also be on probation for four years following his release from prison. Overall, eight firearms, ammunition, and more than $160,000 in cash were seized during the investigation.  According to the Southern District of Indiana U.S. Attorney's Office, the Vigo County Drug Task Force began investigating Francis for methamphetamine distribution in the summer of 2020. Local joint law enforcement warrant round-up nets several drug-related arrests

By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News Twelve suspects were arrested for various charges during a joint law enforcement warrant round-up and saturated patrols Monday, including one who was already held in the Vigo County Community Corrections Center. Officers from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, West Terre Haute Police Department and the Seelyville Town Marshal conducted the operation, seizing drugs and issuing several traffic citations. Arrested during the operation: - Aaron Elkins – Elkins was arrested while housed at the Community Corrections Center. He had a warrant for dealing methamphetamine and now faces additional charges of possession of meth ---after police say approximately 18 grams of meth and more than $4,000 in cash were seized from his locker and vehicle, which were on Community Corrections' property. THPD officer pleads guilty to groping women, resigns

  ICN file photo By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News A Terre Haute Police Department officer has resigned following a guilty plea in city court Tuesday morning. Trevor W. Singer, 25, was sentenced to 420 days of formal probation for two counts of battery and one public nudity misdemeanor offenses filed in July.  Singer, whom was off-duty at the time of the allegations, was immediately placed on leave. He was a partolman with the department for less than two years at the time of the charges. According to the probable cause affidavit, filed by Det. Ryan Winters, of the Indiana State Police, Singer had allegedly grabbed and groped two women at separate times that night, forcefully kissing them on the mouth and exposing his genitals.  The first incident happened outside the Copper Bar on Wabash Avenue and the other occurred outside the Poplar Pub located at Meadows Shopping Center.
