A suspect is dead and a domestic abuse victim hospitalized following a report of a stabbing with an officer-involved shooting late Thursday morning on Terre Haute's north side.

James Ready, 42, was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to the hospital.

Around 11:30 a.m, the Terre Haute Police Department and Terre Haute Fire Department were dispatched to the 1600 block of First Avenue.  At the scene, a woman was observed to be alert and was assisted onto a stretcher. According to scanner traffic at the time, a male shooting victim was nonresponsive at the residence.

No officers were injured in the incident. Police have confirmed the suspect was armed with a knife and was shot and killed after officers forced entry into the home.

A Terre Haute Police Department spokesman stated that the first officer at the scene had reported hearing a female scream for help and proceeded to kick the door in when no one answered. Things escalated quickly at that point.

"Inside, the officer reported observing a male with a knife and ordered him repeatedly to drop it. The male refused to drop the knife and advanced toward the officer, who fired his duty weapon. The officer requested immediate medical assistance, and the male was transported to a local hospital where he was later declared deceased," he said, noting that Officer Adam Noel has been with the department for eight years is placed on administrative leave while the investigation takes place.

The Indiana State Police have been asked to investigate the incident. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
