Man sentenced to 15 years in federal prison following Vigo County drug investigation

By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News An Indianapolis man was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to drug trafficking-related charges following a Vigo County investigation. Steven Francis, 56, was sentenced  in federal court  Monday in Terre Haute. He  will serve the time in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, illegal possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon and laundering of monetary instruments. He will also be on probation for four years following his release from prison. Overall, eight firearms, ammunition, and more than $160,000 in cash were seized during the investigation.  According to the Southern District of Indiana U.S. Attorney's Office, the Vigo County Drug Task Force began investigating Francis for methamphetamine distribution in the summer of 2020. Local joint law enforcement warrant round-up nets several drug-related arrests

By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News Twelve suspects were arrested for various charges during a joint law enforcement warrant round-up and saturated patrols Monday, including one who was already held in the Vigo County Community Corrections Center. Officers from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, West Terre Haute Police Department and the Seelyville Town Marshal conducted the operation, seizing drugs and issuing several traffic citations. Arrested during the operation: - Aaron Elkins – Elkins was arrested while housed at the Community Corrections Center. He had a warrant for dealing methamphetamine and now faces additional charges of possession of meth ---after police say approximately 18 grams of meth and more than $4,000 in cash were seized from his locker and vehicle, which were on Community Corrections' property. THPD officer pleads guilty to groping women, resigns

  ICN file photo By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News A Terre Haute Police Department officer has resigned following a guilty plea in city court Tuesday morning. Trevor W. Singer, 25, was sentenced to 420 days of formal probation for two counts of battery and one public nudity misdemeanor offenses filed in July.  Singer, whom was off-duty at the time of the allegations, was immediately placed on leave. He was a partolman with the department for less than two years at the time of the charges. According to the probable cause affidavit, filed by Det. Ryan Winters, of the Indiana State Police, Singer had allegedly grabbed and groped two women at separate times that night, forcefully kissing them on the mouth and exposing his genitals.  The first incident happened outside the Copper Bar on Wabash Avenue and the other occurred outside the Poplar Pub located at Meadows Shopping Center.

Police say TH man cut off ankle bracelet and escaped before standoff

Jail A Terre Haute man on ordered to be on house arrest reportedly had cut off his ankle bracelet and escaped earlier this week before being recaptured by police Thursday. Anthony W. Cheesman, 40, was booked into the Vigo County Jail after a two-hour long standoff. According to the report, family members said Cheesman --- who was serving time on home detention for drug charges at the time of his escape -- was armed and going to commit “suicide by cop.” Ultimately, members of the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force located Cheeseman at 1647 6th Ave., where he was barricaded in an upstairs attic space. The THPD Special Response Team assisted at the scene. A search warrant was executed and Cheesman was taken into custody and transported to the jail, where he is held on active arrest warrants.

Jail photos By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News  SULLIVAN COUNTY- Two suspects were arrested on drug charges after a vehicile was pulled over for speeding in Sullivan County Monday evening. The  driver, Jonathan Clymer, 28, of Terre Haute and a passenger, Isaac Bradbury, 28, of Dugger were booked into the Sullivan County Jail on multiple charges.  According to Sgt. Matt Ames of the Indiana State Police, a trooper stopped the car on SR 54 near Section Street in Sullivan around 5:30 p.m.   The trooper detected criminal activity when speaking with the suspects. Traffic stop for expired plates lands two in jail on drug charges

  By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News Two suspects were arrested on drug charges following a traffic stop on Terre Haute's north side Wednesday evening. Booked into the Vigo County Jail : -  The driver, Thomas Boatman, 51, of Clinton: Possession of methamphetamine prior conviction, Felony 5 Possession of methamphetamine, Felony 6 Possession of cocaine, Felony 6 Possession of marijuana, Class B Misdemeanor  Possession of paraphernalia, Class A Misdemeanor  -  A passenger, Eric Wise, 47, of Terre Haute: Possession of methamphetamine, Felony 6 Indiana State Police Sgt. Matt Ames explained that a trooper  was patrolling near Second Avenue and N. 24th Street around 5 p.m., when he stopped a vehicle for an expired license plate.  Because suspicious activity was detected, a search of the vehicle was conducted, Ames said, noting that  marijuana, paraphernalia, cocaine and methamphetamine were discovered at that time.

2 older adults dead in apparent murder - suicide south of Terre Haute

 By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News Lucy Perry photo A man and woman --  both senior citizens --  were found dead at a residence south of Terre Haute Saturday morning.  The Vigo County Sheriff's Office death investigation revealed the deaths were due to an apparent murder-suicide.  Sheriff John Plasse identified the victims as Bernard Myles, 69, and Onalee Myles, 73. The investigation began when emergency crews were called to1859 Oakridge Parkway North around 9:30 a.m. The subdivision is located near the federal prison in southern Vigo County. Additional information, including manner of death, is unavailable at this time, as the investigation is ongoing. Meanwhile, officials say an autopsy is scheduled this week.  Honey Creek Fire Department,  Indiana State Police,   Vigo County Coroner’s Office   assisted VCSO personnel at the scene.

Investigation underway after fire at Terre Haute store

According to scanner traffic, the fire is being investigated at this time and arson is suspected. Just before 9:30 p.m. , crews were called to the Burlington Coat Factory store on the city's south side. Firefighters were able to quickly get a fire in the back of the building under control. 

Pedestrian struck by vehicle near downtown Terre Haute

ICN File photo UPDATE 7 p.m.- Police say  the pedestrian died from  injuries at the scene.  The victim’s  identity is not being released at this time, pending notification of next of kin.   The driver of the vehicle,  Jordan P. Wanted man allegedly threatened to shoot as officers arrived at northside residence

Eacret By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News A Terre Haute man was arrested following a standoff on the city's north side after police were alerted to the wanted suspect's whereabouts Wednesday morning. Marvin L. Eacret, 30, was booked into the Vigo County Jail around 7:30 a.m. He is charged with intimidation, resisting law enforcement and had arrest warrants for three counts of invasion of privacy, criminal confinement and domestic battery. According to the Terre Haute Police Department, officers arrived on scene in the 1600 block of N. 14th Street and were initially given permission to enter the house. The suspect became hostile at that time ---- reportedly shouting that "anyone entering the house would be shot." The Special Response Team responded to the scene. Eacret was taken into custody a short time later.
