Terre Haute police looking for person of interest in northside shooting

UPDATE 9/8/22 - From the Terre Haute Police Department: Prior to 9 P.M., members of our detective division were assisted by the U.S. Marshals’ Fugitive Task Force and the Indiana State Police in locating and arresting Richard Sandlin. Sandlin was taken into custody near Gallagher Road and Rio Grande Avenue in northern Vigo County. He has been questioned by our detectives regarding the homicide of Donald Riley and transported to the Vigo County Jail. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Sandlin on charges of Murder and Unlawful Possession of a Handgun. Sandlin already had an active warrant for probation violation on an unrelated case.

UPDATE 9-6-22- The Terre Haute Police Department confirms the shooting victim died from the gunshot wound. The search for Sandlin continues.

A Terre Haute man was shot at a northside residence Saturday night. Meanwhile, a manhunt is underway for the alleged shooter.


While the Terre Haute Police Department investigation continues, officials say they are seeking the whereabouts of the person of interest in the case: Richard A.“Tony” Sandlin, 55.


Police urge you to call 911 if you see Sandlin or know his whereabouts. He is believed to be armed and dangerous.

Emergency crews responded to the 1100 block of Eighth Avenue around 9:30 p.m. The possible suspect had reportedly fled the scene on a motorcycle prior to police arrival.
