Fleeing motorcyclist dead after crash

By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News Police say a ma n died after crashing his motorcycle into an SUV a s he fled from officers during an attempted traffic stop on Terre Haute’s north side Friday night. Kaleb Long, 24, of Terre Haute, died shortly after being transported to a local hospital, just after 7 p.m.  Sgt. Matt Ames,  of the Indiana State Police, explained that Trooper Daniel Organ  tried to stop the 2012 Suzuki for a registration violation at the intersection of N. Third Street and Eighth Avenue. However, Long disregarded police and fled southbound at a high rate of speed. A pursuit ensued. Ultimately, the pursuit ended when the motorcycle struck a 2002 Jeep Liberty at N. Third and Cherry Streets. The other driver, Brian Scott, 53, also of Terre Haute, was not injured in the accident. One dead in crash with train

UPDATE 9-19-22 : The driver in Friday’s fatal train /car accident has been identified as 81 -year -old Kenneth Hauptli, of Terre Haute.   —- Sept.  17,2020 By Lucy Perry  Indiana Central News  A crash involving a train killed one person in southern Vigo County Friday evening.  The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office investigation is ongoing and the name of the victim has not been released at this time. Emergency crews responded to the scene just before 7 p.m. The train collided with the vehicle  south of Gross Road, at a railroad crossing near Doberman Street.  Sheriff John Plasse said the driver was dead at the scene.

UPDATE from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, 8/22/22: The names of the victims in Sunday’s fatal crash on S.R. 46 are being released and are as follows-  Killed in the crash were: •18 -year -old Christian Eubanks,of Waukegan, Illl, •19 -year -old Jayden Musili, of Ft. Wayne, Ind. •19 -year -old Caleb VanHooser, of Liberty Township,  Ohio  Injured in the crash were: •20 -year- old Omarian Dixon, of Lafayette, Ind. •19 -year -old John Moore, of Wheaton, Ill. Officials say alcohol was a factor in the crash, as well as heavy rain and speeding. —- 8/21/22 By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News  Three people are dead after a single-vehicle crash in southern Vigo County early Sunday morning. According to Sheriff John Plasse, the vehicle crashed into a tree in Riley, just outside of Terre Haute, around 1:30 a.m. The driver and two of the passengers were dead at the scene. Police say man was angry with son when he fired shots at his home

By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News A Terre Haute man was taken into custody after police say he fired multiple shots into a relative's home and vehicle early Sunday morning. John Lyman Jr., 49, was booked into the Vigo County Jail a short time later. He is charged with charged with: burglary while armed with a deadly weapon; burglary of a dwelling; criminal recklessness; and intimidation using a deadly weapon. Terre Haute Police Department officers were dispatched to the residence located in the area of Blakely and Wabash Avenues on a call for shots fired, just before 6 a.m. The suspect reportedly had fled the scene prior to police arrival and was located later on. According to the report, officers allege the victim’s father had fired multiple rounds into the victim’s home. They say shots were fired through an entry door and a bedroom window of the residence. Vigo County man accused of incest, child molesting

By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News  A Terre Haute man accused of child molesting was arrested over the weekend. Andrew Haynes Sr., 44, was booked into the Vigo County Jail Saturday around 5:30 p.m. He is facing multiple charges, including: child molesting (child under 14,) criminal deviant conduct, sexual misconduct with a minor, rape, incest and intimidation. Two victims have come forward. The alleged incidents with the first victim  began in 2000, when the victim was 10 and continued until she was 14. According to the probable cause affidavit, filed by Det. Ryan Winters, of the Indiana State Police,  the first alleged incident happened in the child’s bedroom. The suspect had allegedly come into the room and began inappropriately touching her while she was sleeping. According to court documents, at a later time—— when the victim was changing clothes—- Haynes allegedly came into the room and raped her, threatening to get his handgun if she screamed. Pedestrian hospitalized after being struck by allegedly impaired driver in Terre Haute

Jail By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News A pedestrian was hospitalized with serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Terre Haute Tuesday evening. The driver, Donald J. Whitaker, 34, of Terre Haute, was booked into the Vigo County Jail around 9:30 p.m. He is charged with operating with a controlled substance causing serious injury, a level 5 felony. Emergency crews responded incident at the intersection of 35th Street and Wabash Avenue around 5 p.m. Further information on the victim has not been released.
